WFCA thoughts

Got back late from the WFCA all-star game so I thought I'd wait until this AM to offer a few thoughts.

Milwaukee King WR Lance Kendricks is a very fluid athlete who made plays whenever the South tried to get the ball to him. Like many high school receivers, particularly from this state, Kendricks still has much to learn about the passing game.

But he is big and can move and generally catches the ball with his hands rather than his body. He'll be competing for playing time at UW soon.

Gabe Carimi was in good spirits last night despite spending the second half of the game on crutches. He was signing autographs afterward while a pair of reporters waited to chat with him. He said he could have played if needed but didn't want to take any chances.

His father thought Gabe would be off for a few weeks. When I told Gabe that he just smiled and said I'll be off for one week. We'll see.

That's it for now.

UW recruit Kendricks impressive; Carimi hurt

University of Wisconsin football recruit Lance Kendricks, a wide receiver from Milwaukee King, looked good in the first half of the WFCA all-star game Saturday night in Oshkosh.

Hendricks, playing for the South, had a 49-yard TD catch with 1:46 left in the first half and has four catches for 79 yards in the half.

The North led the South, 10-7, at the half.

The news wasn't as good for UW recruit Gabe Carimi, an offensive lineman from Monona Grove. Carimi suffered a sprained left ankle early in the second quarter, and according to his father who was at the game, is expected to be sidelined for about three weeks.

The injury likely will slow Carimi's development in pre-season camp. UW players are scheduled to report for camp on Aug. 6. The first full practice is set for Aug. 7.

WFCA all-star game pre-game

Oshkosh -- Just a few quick notes to any Wisconsin football fans interested in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association all-star game tonight.

UW has several recruits in the game, although some are being held out because of minor injuries.

Both wide receiver D. Jenkins from Racine Park and offensive lineman Brad Thorson from Homestead are nursing minor injuries but should be set for UW's camp, which opens Aug. 7.

Monona Grove offensive lineman Gabe Carimi, who is playing for the South team, is set to play left tackle. However, he expects to start out at right tackle in UW's camp.

Verona's Kirk DeCremer, the first recruit to commit to UW coach Bret Bielema, will play both DE and TE tonight. However, he has been told his first look at UW will come at DE.

I'm really curious to see Milwaukee King WR Lance Kendricks. Given the personnel UW lost after last season, playing time at WR is to be had and Kendricks looks the part.
